I had no idea what to expect from this film. I know Lakeith Stanfield mostly from his comedy work. So, I assumed there was going to be some level of comedy happening. In my opinion, it didn't disappoint.
In all honesty, when "Sorry to Bother You" directed by Boots Riley, first started I had no idea what was going on. I feel like the action was happening a little too fast for my liking. I do understand though that there was a lot to sort of set up and get through.
As it continues to progress, I definitely started to enjoy it. The scene where the CEO was on tv dressed with the scarf reminded me of the caricature of a "new generation CEO" that has been surfacing all lover social media, which was hilarious to me.
This white corporate voice has certainly taken me on a rollercoaster. I started off hating it, but I understand the satirical nature of it. It's definitely something that I think most black people can relate to.
Lakeith is another one of my favorites, so seeing him being conflicted between going after his wants or being loyal to his coworkers and the cause that they are protesting was very interesting to watch. I enjoy watching an actor be solid in their diversity especially when he has a mostly comedic role but watching those dramatic made him real to me.
Now, the scene with the horse people as he goes to bathroom was a lot. It was an extreme shock value that for a second took me out of the story. But as it progresses, I can see the writer's and director's commitment to this piece of the story. In my opinion, shock value like this only works when you commit to it. If you half do it, it just doesn't work. They really took it there, and I think that's what made it funny and therefor what made it work for the story.
Overall, I enjoyed watching the movie. It was very funny and entertaining to watch. I enjoyed the diverse cast` and the black lead. Lakeith once again is one of my favorites, so I would've enjoyed the story probably anyway, so maybe I'm a little biased.
