BLACKS ONLY...films

Of course that was satirical. But what are black films?

Black films are films that are created by us and for us.

Since slavery, we black folks have been fighting to maintain spaces where we can create art that allows us to pour out everything that we carry. As an artist myself, I have always found it imperative to have a safe space and creative environment where I can express myself and take risks that I normally may not be able to take in a more diverse setting.

While there is nothing wrong with films that are diverse, black films allow black people to explore their stories that might be foreign to others.

Does black films have to only have black people in it?

Absolutely not. The idea of black films just tell the story or history of black people and of course the cast should be predominately black. A black protagonist is a must! We don't need a white savior, so don't even try it. We don't want white narrators, because who better to lead us through our own stories than us. We don't want white directors or writers. There are plenty of talented black directors and writers out there. There's a surplus of talented black leading actors and an abundance of black supporting actors. We don't mind a comic relief white character, but even that isn't necessary because black folks excel in comedy.

A great example of a modern black film would be Black Panther. A Marvel movie about a fictional country in Africa and its hero. A black protagonist, a black antagonist, a predominately black cast, and a black storyline. There's a taste of diversity with C.I.A. agent K. Ross, a vibranium theif Klaue (a notorious Marvel villain), and a ton of background characters.  There is action, comedic aspects, and a grand storyline that keeps the audience roped in about the journey of this black hero fighting for the title of King of Wakanda, and saving his people. Hence, why it made a whole lot of money and has great ratings.

This is an example of a well orchestrated black film. This is what we want!

Ladies and gentlemen...black films.
